Double Self-Portrait

This year,
2021, we experienced record-breaking natural disasters, the continued
global Coronavirus
pandemic, international political crises, and a general psychological
foment. As I chewed on these issues
with one of my best friends, Blair Brown (we have spoken every
Sunday morning for almost 50 years), I told
her I felt like I had no skin, and she admonished me to exorcise
those demons by painting that feeling. So,
I used a skinned Hapalemur griseus (Bamboo lemur) as my alter
ego. The image is borrowed from Alfred
Grandidier’s Histoire Physique. Naturelle et Politique de
Madagascar (1890).
