The
Sage - Ikoto - 2020
Ikoto was a
Sandford's brown lemur, a species that hales from one small area
in
the northernmost point of Madagascar, primarily on Amber Mt, where
I saw them
scrambling around. The males, especially, enchanted me with their
orange-golden
eyes and cream-colored fur spiking around their heads, like so
many mad scientists.
“Our” Ikoto died of old age at almost 30 years old
at the LCF reserve in May 2020 - the last
of
his kind in captivity. He was an especially sweet animal, much-loved
by all of us who
knew
him. He mourned for days after his companion died, uttering sad
staccato
uh-uh-uh-uh
sounds – calling out for her and tearing our hearts out.
We were especially devastated by losing Ikoto. He has become a
vivid symbol of our
battle to save as many lemur species as possible from the fast
whirling drain of
extinction.
